I guess this was always on the cards once Cooper became a full-time O's defender. I assume Thomo's and Ed's wages will lighten the financial load somewhat.

Not surprised either. As a loan player he'd have been expecting game time and the fact that we've been pretty solid of late with Happe and Omar playing well, plus now we have Cooper he was 4th choice.
Although there would be a good case to argue for all 4 of them to be either first choice or 4th choice. A solid player.

Does leave us a centre back light in my opinion though.

Not quite kicked on this season . Will probably benefit if he can get the extra games at Crewe. We have three good CB’s and should have adequate cover with Tom James and Jordan Brown able to fill in the event of injury.

In the same way we signed Agyei partly on the back of his performance for Crewe against us last year, someone at Crewe probably recalled Ed Turns' goal in the same match.

CB is a specialist role and whilst you can ask any player to play anywhere it don’t mean they can with any degree of adequacy. 4 Centre Backs cover 2 spots with this “thick and fast” games period coming up is required. Still 18 games to go. This situation is very much at odds with the players needing a rest mantra that is regularly put out. |

Letting Thompson go of course was our choice and probably the club being fair to the player. Hard to criticise. However the potential was always there, as it was with Happe and enough time for contingency to be put in place. Announced at the last minute but negotiations likely happening for a while. We have experienced professionals in charge and contingency planning is bog standard. So my guess is the club are happy with the situation and with Brown covering in emergencies. Ready to regroup and rebuild in the summer after a decent first year in league 1. Play out the rest of the season, ensure survival which is almost there, then move on. |
