I know dohnut here can't be one as he's supported since 1958. But anyone remember the west side lads at the os who were constantly in fear of a policeman nicknamed Sgt sideburns? He onced chucked out a lad for shouting out because his backed horse had won the grand national. Also Greek/Turkish guy who sold iffy
burgers nicknamed the fat frier?

I certainly don’t remember anything. A 10 year old I barely remember the games I did go to. Burnley being the first I recall, and then not much. Peanuts, tanner a bag is about it.

I don’t remember stuff like this at all. Tbh despite watching games regularly there are few incidents either on the pitch or in the crowd that I really recall after a while with any great accuracy, bar the big moments . I do remember getting Johnny Carey’s autograph. Don’t see that any more at the players entrance. Kids with books waiting for players, do they still do that?

The Deep Fat Fryer who operated in the old West Side had a song. Well more of a repetitive chant than a song. Also some entrepreneur sold some Deep Fat Fryer tee shirts. I bought one but alas no longer in my wardrobe.

In the 60s, after the match my dad would buy takeaway Cod and chips for both of us, in old money cost around one shilling for the fried fish and 3 pence for the chips, thats around 6 or 7 pence in modern money, how prices have rocketed since those times. Also a portion of Rock eel, ( also called rock salmon ) was a few pence cheaper. All wrapped up in newspaper and petrol was around 5 shillings a gallon !

My favourite cos it had no bones. Rock Eel in my local chippy in the 60s was the cheapest fish at around nine or ten pence old money per portion and Cod or Haddock was around one shilling to the one and three shillings mark per portion. Chips only three pence old money for a small portion. Many different names for Rock Eel.
''Rock salmon, also called rock eel, flake, huss or Sweet William, is a variety of fish as food, usually served in Britain as part of a fish and chips dish. The term can describe many species of small shark, including the spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias), starry smooth-hound (Mustelus asterias),[1] rough-hound (Scyliorhinus canicula) and bull huss (Scyliorhinus stellaris). Rock salmon is consumed in many European countries. However, the spiny dogfish is now an endangered species due to overfishing and is classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List[2] and the North East Atlantic population is classed as Critically Endangered''

Friday was fish and chips in the DOhnut household. Wrapped in newspaper with the fat oozing through the paper. Chips 4d regular and 6d large. Cod or Rock. Never liked Skate, no patience with the bones. And a wally for good measure. The occasional savaloy. Roe sometimes, but not for me. Hated it then and still do today Lashings of vinegar, salt and ketchup. And no calorie counting like now.

Eaten straight from the newspaper with fat oozing through the paper with if lucky a cup of tea and couple of slices of bread and butter, LUVERLY GRUB !! Yes also never liked Roe from the chippy but dad liked it, he also liked cockles and mussels as well when we went to Southend, but not for me thanks ! Miss my mum and dad so much and understand and appreciate them now far more than when I was in my younger years.
