Orient seem afraid to give 3 year deals. Maybe the George Moncur debacle put them off. Maybe Brown did not want to sign a three year contract. Alternatively the salary may at be different on a three year contract and it suits both as is. There are my any other reasons why some players sign contracts of different durations.

Interesting comments from Steve Evans following the proposed departure of Rotherham’s Ollie Rathbone on the eve of the new season and the Board’s decision to allow player contracts to “ run down”.👍 x.com/footballheaven/status/1821857535617339608

Davis Keilor Dunn likely to move to Barnsley from Mansfield (after this evenings game) for something north of 500k.
John McAtee goes from Luton to Bolton. He was the standout player for Grimsby against us a couple of years back a class above.

Some of this makes you realise how rubbish our window has been, & how weak we are compared to other clubs in our division.

I will give the benefit of the doubt to Ling & Co at the moment, as I for one, have not yet seen any of the new guys play a competitive game. The facts are pretty clear however - financially we are unable / unwilling to compete with a far greater number of clubs in the division this season than we were last season which , dare I say, doesn’t bode well.😕

Some of this makes you realise how rubbish our window has been, & how weak we are compared to other clubs in our division. Because all the posts are about activity as opposed to a lack thereof, and mostly incomings into the league as opposed to departures out of it. Visibility bias. For balance, here's a list of other teams that currently have a smaller squad than they ended last season with: Birmingham Stockport Charlton Rotherham Peterborough Reading Bristol Exeter Northampton Stevenage Wycombe Cambridge Shrewsbury Including us, that's 14 teams. According to Transfermarkt valuations, only two of those teams have a higher value squad than at the end of last season: Stockport and... Leyton Orient. 18 teams have squads of lower value than they ended last season with. We are not one of them. We'll actually need to see teams play before we really know who's had the best window, but on paper we're arguably having one of the better ones.

We'll actually need to see teams play before we really know who's had the best window, but on paper we're arguably having one of the better ones. As someone who studies the ins and outs, great care needs to be taken. For example Birmingham may have a smaller squad but you need to look at who went after relegation and who came in. They are in no way weaker. Frightening really. Others too like Rotherham had a clear out and have recruited very well. Same for Bristol Rovers. Etc. some of that list have added real quality. Numbers don’t tell the whole story. RW is not the only manager to comment on how strong league 1 is. Quite impressive for tier 3. Our squad at 28 players, more than two for every position in numbers look OK. But strip out 4 keepers, the young inexperienced kids, the injured and unfit and we are short of depth, big time. Especially as a couple of our losses are decent quality players. Our weak areas are glaringly clear. Squad wise we start this season weaker than last. Other than at the back. But of course we need to wait and see. On paper we have had a poor window, but as Brian Clough said, the game is not played on paper. I feel there are other teams who have not improved so we should be OK. Many in this squad have been together for a season + and that will help.

The reality being none of us know, only guessing based on the players statistics. On paper Birmingham should walk it, but will they? On paper Crawley should be bottom. We wait and see. Thats what makes football great. The anticipation, the hope and on occasions the reality of a championship winning season. Going to be a really interesting season and right now we are equal top. Looking forward to it with the usual hope rather than expectation. Come on you Os. You can do it.

The beginning of last season, who would have thought Ruel might step up to League 1 and bag 10+ goals. Who was Shaq Forde, complete unknown. Obiero was sent out on loan, now he is a serious starter. We had Agyei, but he was injured and nobody knew if he could step up to League 1. At the start of every season there are so many unknowns, so that comparing how strong or not the squad is compared to last year is finger in the air stuff. Yes we have lost El Miz, and Ruel has been replaced by Kelman, but we don't know how Perkins, Warrington, DJ or Clare will perform, it's all speculation. Beginning of last season we didn't have O'Neill or Simpson, and both of those players I would suggest have strengthened our squad. All of our players have benefitted from the experience of a full season at a higher level and are therefore better prepared as a result. So to say we are weaker than last season is IMO wrong. We haven't had a poor window, we retained almost all of the out of contract players we wanted to and have added some decent others to the squad, with as RW has indicated, another couple to come. Come on you O's.
