Ive never been a huge Southgate fan when it comes to the England team. Can we honestly say that Richie wouldnt do better with this squad?

If Serbia can do this to us what will a half decent team do It was only the first game. English fans should be more optimistic. Southgate's always done good. Has he?

A routine win. Nothing to get excited about. Serbia had 11 behind the ball 1st half. They came out and put us under a bit of pressure in the 2nd, as they had to at 1-0 down. But never felt we were in trouble, and we came the closest to scoring with Kane’s header. Job done, move on.

To quote the great Dave Mackay on being questioned why he whacked the ball into the back of the stand during a period of opposition pressure. “I've never seen a goal scored from row Z” As we know only too well, part of game management is sometimes very negative. Getting organised at the back, wasting a few seconds which heaps even more pressure on the opponent. Frustrating etc. Going gung-ho can be exciting to watch but not always the best thing to do. The proof is in the results. England won so why criticise the way they did it. Plenty of opportunities to do that later in the tournament no doubt. I’ll take a win over performance any day. England defence is as the modern fashion, keep playing too much short passing when under pressure in their own penalty box far too much passing playing 50/50 passes to players with opposition players near to them, resulting in losing possession many times in critical areas. Yes when under pressure better to put the ball out upfield but out of touch rather then ( as happened too many times last night ) hoofing the ball downfield to the central areas of the pitch where you immediately lose possession and get the ball played straight back into the danger areas as happened far too many times last night in the second half. Yet for all that Serbia managed just 1 shot on target. But it’s not a system I enjoy watching. In fact I don’t really like the England style of play. Mind you I don’t Much like the way RW sets up to play. But it’s hard to criticise a system that made us Champions. Let’s hope Southgate does the same.

Yes a wins a win.we did expect a robust response from them.all big strong units like Croatia. We pass around looking for openings, its a bit tedious, but teams are swamping Kane triple marking. Bellingham has elements of a young Pele.huge talent there.

It was only the first game. English fans should be more optimistic. Southgate's always done good. Has he? He inherited a squad culture that had been toxic for two decades to become objectively the most successful England manager since Alf Ramsey. He's reached at least the semis in the 3 major tournaments he's overseen, something we hadn't managed even once since 96. So yes, he's always done well. If any other manager is ever capable of winning something with this England team it will be because of the job Southgate did before them. Does that mean he should stay in the job? Not necessarily. But who would a) do better, and b) actually want the job?

These seem justified too Lost a semi and a final after taking the lead with a sit back on a 1-0 lead mentality. Has made a poor call on substitutions or lack of at times throughout his tenure Sent on young players who hadn't kicked a ball for a penalty shoot out Stuck to out of form players who at times weren't even playing for their clubs. Despite being 3rd in number of games as an England manager still won the same amount as every other one bar Sir Alf.

I could probably write 10,000 words on all the ways he made a meal of the last Euros final, so that game aside:
You can literally make this point against any manager though. Ramsey took Bobby Charlton off in the 1970 quarter final and went on to ship a two-goal lead. Where's the manager who can replace Southgate who hasn't sometimes made the wrong sub?
He's also dropped out-of-form players and those he's stuck by have mostly performed well for England. How many of these out-of-form players can you propose good replacements for? Maguire? Replacements have always performed worse, bar Guehi on Sunday. Henderson? Now he's gone, who plays in his position is one of England's main issues. Sterling? Well we've just replaced him with the Premier League's player of the season. Has Foden ever played well for England?
Not sure where you're getting this from but it's wildly misleading:
- Discarding Allardyce's 1-win-in-1 record, Southgate has the second highest win percentage (61.5%). The highest is Capello (66.7%) and he never made it further than the last 16 in a tournament.
- Southgate's percentage is massively skewed by the Nations League (33.3%), something no other manager has had to deal with. You may not agree, but I'm quite happy for him to treat these games as friendlies, even if they end up counting as "competitive" losses.
- Southgate has won more major tournament games than any other England manager (12 in comparison to Ramsey's 8).

I'll add that if Southgate does well at this tournament too, you might even be able to make the case for him being the greatest manager England has ever had. Look at Ramsey's record beyond 1966:
Euro 64 - Out after the first game Euro 68 - SF WC 70 - QF Euro 72 - QF EC 74 - Didn't qualify, got sacked
Consider that there were far few games so tournaments were theoretically easier to win. Also, that Ramsey had the benefit of being the only manager to contest a World Cup at home. Suddenly his record looks just alright.

What the heck are England doing playing around with the ball around their area. They keep putting themselves under unnecessary pressure. Oh Denmark have just scored because of this stupid behaviour.
