I’m not sure Charlton’s subs made all that big of an impact tbh. Did you have anyone in mind specifically? I’d agree that our subs overall weakened the team DJ & Warrington did nothing but then Oberio and O’ Neil were pretty anonymous too. Certainly Beckles and Sweeney replacing Cooper and James was a downgrade. As we all know though , we will find it hard to match the depth that teams like Charlton can offer. Small and Aneke ran our defenders ragged..Our subs made no impact Respect your opinion but don’t agree with it tbh. Thought Clare dealt reasonably well with Small and Beckles might have been a “ loser on points” in his wrestling match but I don’t accept he was “ run ragged”. Our substitutes didn’t make an impact because primarily they were brought on at a time when we already wilting in midfield . The Charlton substitutes were mostly able to come on when they were on the front foot and had momentum, hence the difference I thought👍

What I am surprised about is the formation has not been discussed.
The diamond don't work.
O'Neil had now been made a passenger and his performances have gone backwards due to the shape. We lack true width due to tucking in. The tip isn't efficient enough. Our forward Dan is starved of any quality balls, and has to fight a 6ft 4" defender who is rag dolling him all over the place and ain't get any help or protection from the ref.
We have to revert to 4-2-3-1
Charlton are not a good side. They defend well to their credit, but there is no invention, no cutting you open, no passing triangles, no playing through the thirds. Route one, channel play that I was coached back in the 80's. They press well, I will give them that. But chances are not created, shots are not happening.
The ref didn't help, but we also didn't help ourselves.
So we've played two games, each should have been a draw and both were and would have been credible results against two "supposed" big clubs. Neither are great, both bog standard teams for this level. We are not far away, we lack that last little bit of difference to take then on and actually beat them.
I wonder what Richie is thinking tonight?

I know Agyei did well as a 9 when he played last season but I can't help but think him in the middle and Kelman off the wing is the wrong way round. Just me? no, but kelman ain't a no.9 and Richie is forcing this to happen hence our new formation which doesn't work if you ask me.

If we got beaten by “not a very good side” then that doesn’t bode well

They have declared 15,126 as the attendance. There were about 8k in that ground today. I was surprised by the lack of fans for their first home game.

So it's less than 2k This sky deal is going to be bad for football. I was talking to a Charlton fan afterwards and he said as the Wigan game was on TV he sat down relaxed and watched the game. He said I think the same thing happened today with our fans not bothering to come out and just chill drinking beer in the comfort of their own home. Fair points I think. There was loads of room in our end and you were allowed to sit where you wanted as well.

Very surprising, it wasn’t a sell out in Os end and surprised so few Charlton fans showed up on a sunny afternoon. The worst part of the Sky deal is the early kick off, but I just time shifted with first beer at 10:45am and home by 6pm. Would normally be 1pm and 9pm. My wife couldn’t believe I was home so early! Unlikely to do similar for other away games and will just stay at home.

If we got beaten by “not a very good side” then that doesn’t bode well I agree. Neither Bolton nor Charlton look league 1 world beaters at this early stage but both were good enough to beat us. In the two games so far I don’t think we’ve been much to look at either. Hard working, the odd moments but largely ineffective. That second half was poor and we just cannot allow that to continue. Get sorted and in time for the next game.

Get sorted and in time for the next game. It was a fairly even contest in the first half, albeit neither midfields were involved to any extent. In the second, the Charlton midfield stepped up & ours didn't. A Charlton winner looked inevitable long before it came. That said, we were poor at the start of last season, & we got much better from September onwards. In Richie we trust.

We just need 11 players on the field that are fit enough to compete. Currently most of the squad don't seem to have 90mins in their engines. Charlton burnt us out second half and cranked it up and deserved their. finish. Too many friendlies against minnow teams taught us nothing

If I do plenty of running in preseason and less ball work and you do more ball work and less running, I'm gonna be fitter than you are. Jones has absolutely beasted that team with fitness work and the evidence was clear to see as they stayed strong whilst we started to tire.
We will get stronger as the weeks progress, last season I thought the fitness level was due to late arrivals and whilst that's kind of the same this time round I'm sure we could and should be fitter than we are. We saw today we are not fit enough.

Also we have a young team and they will tire quicker than older pros you wouldn't think it but they do the older players have a bit more savvy about them and know how to save energy during games
