I'm off Turbo Trainer at the moment…(suspended)...after picking up a chest infection a few weeks ago.... Then the rainy very wet cold cycle commute on Thursday almost wiped me out... The cold weather affected me, but I think sleeping in a very cold bedroom started this off... Just about recovering...trying to get well enough for Wednesday's cycle commute... Cycle commute. Brave man. I steer well clear of road riding.

As an aside, to those who home train on turbo trainers or spinners.
I can only spin effectively with music. One Album I have is Ride Harder by Chrissie Wellington, iTunes, and it is really good. And hard. Three levels but I only use level 1, a short sharp workout lasting 40 minutes. And for me 400 calories.
It blends warm up and warm down with intervals in between. Work, rest, work, rest and so on up what it calls a pyramid, then Down again. Gradually gets more intense, peaks with a real tough bit, then reverses the process in intensity but still not easy, knackered by then.
I know what works for me, and this does. And I like intervals. We all have our preferences, if this stuff works for you have a listen, but the album is not free. But on iTunes you can sample for free of course.

It was gorgeous ,bright blue sky ,blue water and a sit by the river with my peanut butter sani and a drink . Really nice ride out .

Went for a cycle today, lovely weather. About 3 miles from home catastrophic puncture, tyre off the rim, so rather than lock it up and walk back for the car, decided to carry it home. That was a tough workout. Time for some wine and serious jockin to get the frown off my face. And today started out so well 😁

Then when I was just about getting over it, I had a very wet cold cycle commute wearing obviously the wrong plastic hi-viz top which was very thin... Summer wear really... This set me back and have had to abandon the Turbo Trainer for four days and concentrate surviving the cycle commutes… Mistakes have been made which hopefully I won’t make next year...like last year... I've only fixed most of this by talking to people at work and had very suspicious looks from the coughing especially out on the road. I even changed to Southwark Bridge from using Tower Bridge as it was so bad... Back to Normal today... It's going to be tight to get to my target of 500 miles after missing four days turbo...

I've got the cycle commute today but when I get back I MUST do the turbo trainer which will leave me 97 Miles short....and on the 31st Jan is my last cycle commute this month
I've got 7 days to do 77 miles on the turbo trainer, so I should get away with it as I did my first turbo trainer session last night which went really well. The turbo trainer sessions seem to go better after I have done the return commute but are harder on my day off…
Next month will be tougher as I will have 28days to do 500 Miles... This month my target was to do it in 28 days which looks to have failed, although I was two days up after 14 days...Should manage to do it in 31 days this month.

I haven't read all of this but may l ask why you are setting yourselves such gruelling targets? Doesn't that make it all a bit onerous and not at all pleasurable?

What Gruelling target are you on about? 500 miles a month is not much more than an hour a days gentle exercise Some people are motivated by setting and striving to reach targets, that makes them happy.

I must be a super softy. 500 miles in a single lifetime would be an achievement for me. 😄 Personally I reckon people like Spen who talk down such things as being gentle don’t actually do it them themselves. It’s not just about the distance but the intensity and on a turbo trainer I’m guessing much of that isn’t free-wheeling but hard graft. i can really understand a distance target, but it’s not one that motivates me. Which is why I interval train. Only 40 minutes a day spinning but gentle it ain’t. It a struggle to keep pace with the Ride Hard music I use and the resistance turn up. But importantly for me not only does improve the body, it strengthens the mind, not giving in when your body is crying out for you to stop. Easy to turn your nose up at 40 minutes, but go do it. 400 calories is a lot to burn in that short time. Measured on my Polar watch and chest strap. Heart rate up to 146. Just below the maximum recommended for my age. Saturday today. Minutes from changing into my tracky stuff. But an added extra this afternoon, on the spinner during the big match. No great intensity but cardiovascular exercise. Will I last out till half time? Depends how motivated I am with what I see. anyway, that moment has arrived.👟🚴🏻🏆 just as an aside, according to Chrissie Wellington, look her up, impressive, indoor cycling is a lot harder than road cycling. According to her training tape about twice as hard. Thought I’d mention that. done. 40 minutes and a little over 400 calories. The training music says 90 minutes indoors is worth 2 hours outdoors. Personally I find outdoor cycling so much easier, your mind has so much more to think about and your eyes so much more to see. Indoors all you hear is the training music and my iPad metronome, all my eyes see is a blank wall and all I feel is the pain. And no free-wheeling. indoor cycling is as hard as it gets. And I doubt, but stand to be corrected, that outdoors you can do 92 rpm over 5 minutes unless on a track.

Lands End to John o Groats 900 miles In 44 hours 😂 200 miles a day is hugely achievable to be honest if you are fit, trained and with a well maintained bike with suitable gear ratios. I certainly would not knock that achievement. what irritated me is the scorn poured on Howlings achievement which is being done in between doing a job. Not a jolly out with the mates with plenty of rest time between each session.

Really? Then you know nothing at all firstly I am not knocking anyone's achievements. I am knocking the view that 500 miles is gruelling. Its a little over an hour a day everyday. Its something anyone can achieve with a little bit of commitment. I cycled just under 1100 miles last month - all out on the road - in all weathers and all temperatures. I cycled well over 9000 miles last year - all outside rather than on indoor set ups. Including a 3 day off road Trans Pennine Trail ride from Southport to Hornsea carrying my own luggage Feel free to look at all my rides - they are on Strava for all to see. I did Lands End to John o Groats alone and carrying my own luggage in a sedate 10 days, oh and at the time I weighed nearly 20 stone in weight as well Cycling is not particularly hard to do. It is having the commitment to do it and the time that is far harder. I was out this morning before 0700 for a quick 25 mile ride in temperatures down to 28F. I would have done longer but I had to be back to let the builders into my home. I will be out later this evening for another hour's ride

Nor any thought to just how much harder indoor cycling is compared to outdoors. To quote Chrissie Wellington. Put it this way. You are clearly proud of what you do, fair enough. How would you feel if a top cyclist looked at your cycling CV and dismissed it because it doesn’t compare with what they do? You would have every right to feel miffed. For some, including the likes of me, the training I do, for my age, health and fitness in my opinion ranks well alongside what you do. Can’t speak for others who do this alongside their work. So don’t knock it and don’t diminish it’s value. Not nice to poor scorn on people’s achievements just because you do more. Thoughtless.
