Happening at last it seems.
Got to admit I have huge sympathy for Japan. The worlds most prestigious sporting event, costing millions. Great way to advertise all that is good about your country, put on a show. Be in the world spotlight. Reduced to 17 days of events without fans, hotels without visitors, an opportunity gone.
I don’t even know who from team GB is taking part. It has the opportunity to be the most expensive non-event in sporting history.
Sad. I won’t be applauding any Chinese winners.

Good thread. Love the Olympics and Japan is a fantastic place.
Always a slow burner with me. Get right into it as the weeks go on.

I doubt we will ever experience Super Saturday again. What a day. My sister and brother in law were lucky enough to be there. Both now sadly gone. I was Lucky enough to get tickets for some events, my grand kids have seen the Olympics live. I saw the final of the football. Plus the Paralympic opening ceremony. Great memories.
I have a piece of the track in a plaque in my study, complete with spike mark hole. This and other memorabilia takes pride of place. The Olympic torch run passed my house. I have a great photo of the runner and the torch going by with my house and family in the background. In a frame on my study wall.
But it’s great to remember that day. Probably for me it’s up there with me watching the England game in 66, on TV.
In normal times I would be in Tokyo now. Don’t matter what event you get to see. It’s the Olympics. I love the games. I watch sports I usually would t bother with. I get into it big time, from day 1.
This year! Nothing. Just name going into the history books.

It’s not going to be the same without any crowds. However, I predict Team GB will do very well. We finished second in the medals table in Rio.

The Japanese would have put everything and more into the Olympics as we did.I went from being a sceptic to going nuts on that Saturday evening.Worth all those walnut whips. The brilliant legacy of those games is what you now see at Stratford City and the Olympic Park. Wasn't it part of your old set up Howling before the Olympics.Must also mention the excellent road set up now.Sometimes saved an hour on the journey home.

It's often argued that showpiece events like the Euro's, World Cup and the Olympics have a detrimental effect on the area and that any financial gain is short lived.
I can agree with the financial gain being short lived and relative to the initial outlay.
But when you look around Stratford now it is massively improved in terms of green spaces, agriculture, facilities and infrastructure.
Let's be honest, even the Olympic Stadium (rightly or wrongly) is being put to a good use and hasn't fallen to pieces like other showpiece arenas.

It hasn't been reduced to 17 days, it's always been 17 days. I always thought it lasted for a month but just found out it's only 17 days. Seems like a month. Now we have the Paralympics a few weeks later I'm in double heaven. Love it all. Shame about not having any fans in. You'd have thought they could of let a few thousand in to get a bit of atmosphere. I'm with you with the Chinese winners.

Love the athletics but don’t watch much else maybe a bit of the swimming. Though will probably be just the highlights with the time difference.

I like the opportunity to watch sports that don’t always get lots of attention, weightlifting, combat, table tennis and so on. I love the variety.

Just about had enough of football for a bit. It’ll be good to watch some sports without the risk of having a heart attack.

I think the water polo is always interesting. It is amazing how they get those ponies to breathe underwater.

It's about time that they brought back International It's a knockout (Jeux sans frontières) to get us through the close season next year.
I think that they only stopped it because it cost too much to put on.
I reckon Graham Norton would be good for that.

I think COVID will do very well in the medal table. Possibly most teams will go down with it, except CHINA.

And we’re off. Japan win the softball 8-1. They are favourites for the gold. GB currently leading Chile 1-0 in the football with 20 minutes to go. Opening ceremony 2 days away, no fans, Covid issues.
But at least it’s started.

From what leagues do the GB football team come from, d'ya know? Looked like the women's team in my online paper. So cannot answer. I like the eventing, the dressage and showjumping.Don't know if that is on the covid Olympics. I also like the track and field, especially the high jump,it looks so graceful. The lovely bouncy run up and the elegant leap.Amazing what the human body is capable of. I don't know if it was the Olympics, but I do recall a Japanese pole vaulter forgetting to let go and swaying about at the top of the pole. All ended well.
