We've all accepted Brexit, whether individually we like it or otherwise. It did come as a shock to me when even the LibDems failed to mention much about "closer ties to the EU" in their manifesto. I just concluded that the political mandarins regard any form of immigration as the biggest of all vote losers and, despite their principles, avoided any form of freedom of movement from their list of promises. I don't often agree with kbola but I make him right about the vast swathes of boomers who still have far too much influence over such things despite the fact we'll all be dead when the future consequences of that influence arrive. Immigration steers UK politics more than any other issue - just as it does in the USA. I contend that it shouldn't be anywhere near the top of people's priorities.

From the outside looking in, istm that it doesn't make that much difference which side sits in No.11 Downing Street. The UK spends too much and earns too little and the elephant in this particular room is the effective rejection of the European market, the world's biggest, as a place to sell goods and services. Somebody will have to grovel to Brussels and find a way to re-enter the the single market even if it is denied that is what they'll be doing. Once you see the return of freedom of movement of labour et-al and the lifting of trade barriers, you'll know the capitulation is complete. Funny thing figures like this. For example looking at GDP/economic growth we have out-performed Germany over the past 10 years, and since the referendum. Exports lower as you say. So much data, slice it as you see fit. But the issue as ever is complex and of course Brexit was never a short term change. Look in 5 years time or more when things like Covid have not affected figures. Grovel to Brussels! They want us back, never wanted us to leave. Any hint of a return and they will be only too happy for it to happen and offer concessions. Thing is Fisch Brexit happened, like it or not. The U.K. managed very well for centuries before the Common Market and is quite capable of doing so again. We just need to stop moaning, focus on the here and now, and get on with it. 10 years post Brexit have another look. ''The U.K. managed very well for centuries before the Common Market and is quite capable of doing so again'' Well said. As to immigration. I like most of us in the UK have no issues with immigrants who come here to work and those who stay here, integrate peacefully into our way of life and work and pay their way.
