I think they should all wear helmets and maybe suits of armour too. It was good enough for Henry VIII when he invented the bicycle. That's why they have cars...
Look at it this way...A car is a suit of armour meaning you can drive like a tit and still survive...

Plenty don’t when you look at the statistics.

Plenty don’t when you look at the statistics. This statistics of how many are killed?
I come up against plenty of not so good driving....A lot to do with lack of concentration and thought...Mobile phones/faffing about not taking it seriously...speeding...poor lane positioning to name a few...
I take my cycling deadly serious including stopping at lights...It's no bother to me...I think the other key is don't rush,either...Yes I do make mistakes but it's not through lack of effort...
Andy Cox @suptandycox · 9m I encourage use of #Headcam and believe it has dangerous driving deterrence, investigative & enforcement benefits. I feel it has made a difference in terms of #Cycling safety by raising awareness of issues such as close pass and is influencing improvements in driving standards.
Although I haven't got one...Can't be bothered.Would guess cars have dashcams...

Andrew Meldrum @andrewmeldrum16 Replying to @jeremyvineon5 Dob? If I see one cyclist
Not wearing a safety helmet. Or high viz. Run a red light. Not have lights on bikes. Then I will seek pleasure in annoying them and grassing them in,,,,
Not required by law is...
Safety Helmet as generally they are no use over 12mph...Just a bit of polystyrene which I wear anyway and Hi-Viz which I wear through choice but is not a legal requirement... I have very good lights on my bike with backup if needed... I don't run traffic lights as it's not safe and doesn't earn respect of other roadusers..
Probably best to know the rules before people post some ridiculous stuff...Not sure why they think why Hi-Viz and Helmets are a legal requirement...
Grass me in all you want and if I am in the wrong I will have no problem with that.
Have pleasure in annoying them? Is that a threat of dodgy driving?

I can understand the 12 mph thing to a degree. But much of the time bikers are either accelerating to that speed or braking and likely to be at times of most risk, junctions, lights, crossing, turning. Areas where stats show many accidents happen. In fact the majority of time when city cycling. But I cannot accept they are of NO use above 12mph. This comment defies logic. They may not defend against major issues but they will offer a degree of protection against stuff. The legal question to me is not the issue, self preservation is. Being within the law is no consolation when you are in a hospital bed, or worse.

I've looked it up on Cycle Helmets...Generally it's luck of the draw or a lottery in how they will protect in event of an accident...Depending on the accident I guess. Hi-Viz and cycle helmets are of no guarentee on how you will fare in an accident...As I say it's luck of the draw...Plus helmet age and design is yet another factor... People seem to think a helmet (and Hi-Viz) is like a Batman suit it isnt...In both variations other factors take precidence... I would guess that because drivers see me wearing the Cycle Helmet and Hi-Viz they probably pass closer than they should (and take more risks)...Although I try defensive cyling and thinking about what they may do and the road ahead..as I don't not really rely on drivers to pass me safely..I still stick by the 12mph rule of a bike helmet...any collsion over this and they become less and less effective...so best not to rely on them either.. I wouldn't discourage people to not wear either ofthese if they want to...(god no) but just be aware of their limitations...
Anyway the factor here was that the poster seemed to think Hi-Viz and Helmets are compulsory on a bike...Of which they are not...A common misconception...Or perhaps just another way to find faults with cycle users from our blameless four wheel friends...

I think the message is quite clear. Protection whether cycling or driving don’t protect against stupidity.. The other message is it don’t matter how careful you are there is little protection from the stupidity of others.
That applies on the road and with stuff like the plague.
Two weeks ago I was extolling the virtues at Weatherspoons in their fight to protect customers against Covid. My second visit and these precautions were less visible. My thirst visit and they were largely non-existent. Not too sure there will be a fourth or fifth visit.
Like all these things. When tragedy strikes we hear all the lessons will be learned stuff but over time naff all really changes. I doubt all the cycle lanes plans from the Government will ever really see the light of day. Good idea at the time.

A mate of mine bought a bike for 7k when he got the cycling bug...Unfortunately he was involved in an accident one morning on the way to work...and I think that's put him off....He's given up...Sadly.

They pull up in front of me as I go to the bookies on a Saturday morning. The fearful sight cannot be avoided. Not there when I pick my winnings up on a Wednesday. The shop is closed all day. They did have a bike frame only, reduced to £3750.Nearly purchased it with my winnings. Then I remembered I do not cycle after my "nuts" incident.

Crap today...Agressive traffic on the way in after Tower Bridge...and back to Normal on the CS 3 (on the way back) with a car seeing me and the cyclist in front but being in such a hurry still thought he'd cross in front of us anyway just past Shadwell...and an agressive driver down a Stratford backstreet who I caught up less than a minute later after letting him pass.Knobber.
Cycle lanes don't protect you from knobbers.Actually they can put you under a false sense of security.

Are you sure, not even for their free refillable coffee mug after you have bought one drink. Got to be a load of free mugs in Wetherspoons... just enjoy my Spoons breakfast and always enjoy the free refills. Those these days you must get a fresh mug. Decent quality most of the time, though I generally stick to beans on toast or toast and jam. Hard to screw that up. And cheap. But the place is very quiet these days. As for expensive bikes. When my son got the bug he spent a few thou on a bike. Madness. I had a look, it was nice, but no big deal compared to my Carrera which is lightweight with bog standard block breaks and 15 speed gears. Does everything a bike needs to do. I guess his bike offers refinements I don’t understand and appreciate. But I definitely got the impression that it was more to do with pose levels than anything else. Got to have the right name on the frame.

My dad had a Vindec bike.It weighed an awful lot,you sat bolt upright.Strange thing was we were a big family, but we always had a car.The Vindec bike probably cost as much as those old cars did.

My latest bike cost £200 quid and was a deliberate cheap build...Including the wheels...So I ditched the wheels and numbered it after a cheaply built BR Loco built in 1976....The history of the locomotives, the first thirty were built in Romania and had to be rebuilt here... The first 30 locomotives (56 001 - 56 030, factory classification LDE3500) were built by Electroputere in Romania, but these suffered from poor construction standards and many were withdrawn from service early for extensive rebuilding before re-entering revenue service.
On the same basis....I remember when the bloke bought it round...and he gave me a look like this guy doesn't know fark all about bikes... Today it has completed 1500 miles since delivery in January....All I have changed is the chainset and the wheels (and handlebar/brake levers/cables)...Thought I would have to change the braking systems but the have been fine and it runs smoothly....No problems....really surprising for such a cheap bike..It's Called No Logo...It's a fixie...
I know the cyclist who did this...Used to post on cyclechat many years ago...Now on Twitter..Saw him at St Paul's once when I was cycling home...He got me on camera and sent me the clip...although I don't know where it is...I also rarely use the St Paul's route anymore...
I had seen this on Twitter but I didn't know he was Guy Richie...Not that I really care...
I have seen too much chaos on the road inclusing seeing three pedestrians lying in the road after some sort of incident on three different occasions...I was five minutes behind the cyclist in 2015 who got hit by the lorry at Mile End...I was cycling home from work and I also saw the tent thing they put up at Bank after the lorry wiped out another cyclist there...
When I was cycling in Thailand I was in a group of four when a mad lorry driver coming in the other direction almost wiped out two motorists waiting to turn after we had passed...We saw him lock the wheels up and just about avoid hitting the two cars as our cyclist guide made hand signals to the lorry driver to slow down...One of my workmates was killed by a hit and run drink driver. So I see where Mikey is coming from.
Great thinking from the tour guide cyclist there and I wish I had thought of it...I could never live with the guilt that if those motorists had been wiped out amd I had done nothing to prevent it from happening because I didn't think of it.
I've had cars pull in too many times including today because they can't be bothered to wait....and also hassled down a side street to get out of the way (although I do ASAP as I don't really trust motorists)...Perfect motorists.
Today is the worst day I have had in a long time...Some really agressive driving and speeding.(and s*** driving also)
