How many of those athletes sailing up the Seine are going to end up in Dover claiming asylum?*
*Sorry, couldn’t resist it.

Sorry for everyone there this evening, it's tanking it down. I wonder if all this celebration of human diversity is aimed at Trump/Putin and the like. If Le Pen had won the recent election, we wouldn't have seen anything like this. Vivre le difference! Shame really. Not the best opening I’ve seen, lots of bits and pieces but nothing special. The boats up the river a nice touch but seemed endless. Got to admit I switched off to it several times so will have missed things. Gaga was mediocre, or was it just the song. The backdrop was nice, liked people on balconies watching on. But the weather was not on their side. Needed a warm sunny day to work and pictures of people in their rain macs just didn’t do it. Nor did an upside down Olympic flag. Not bad but not great.

Really Really bad looks more like bloody eurovision The irony being that the French always stage elegant yet visually arresting performances at Eurovision. (They did actually show a glimpse of it with Celine's performance at the end.)

And we’ve barely begun day one and it’s a Silver in the road cycling and a Bronze in the diving for Team GB.
Our target is between 50-70 medals this year. In Tokyo, we got 64 medals, 22 of which were Gold. In Rio, 67 medals, 27 were Gold and in London 65 of which 29 were Gold.
Some of these results changed as a result of medals being redistributed mostly due to the naughty drug cheating Russians.

I’ll say it. I dont care about the Olympics. Over politicised, eye wateringly corrupt, everything has to be a statement from that Daley geezer to that stupid opening ceremony. Russia excluded (bonkers). Its lost. Done.

Like so many things that were a great exciting watch in the past.Sadly the Olympics has turned sour with its and the host countries politics. I will watch some of it such as white river rafting and the athletics, but it has lost its wonderful lustre for me.

Sport today is significantly better than bygone years. Athletes on another level, stadiums far better and TV coverage to the point of saturation. And politics has reared its ugly head regularly, from black power to athletes being murdered. But we get older, seen it all before, nothing new and so on. The lustre diminishes. Only to be expected.

But amateur athletics had quality of a different sort.Love the game and not the prize. Yes it is an age thing as we have saturation level with sport and it all becomes a little too diluted. That is why I love matchdays at the O's and watching it live. The perspective of watching sport live lets you see almost every movement on the pitch, while tv sport limits the view. The close ups and the camera switch loses a lot of what is taking place. The atmosphere at matches is almost physical with its ups and down and crowd moods.

I am enjoying the South Sudan Men’s Basketball team’s run. Underdogs, France played the wrong anthem for them, and they got their first win against Puerto Rico. This is the fun part of the Olympics for me.

And a Bronze in the Women’s kayaking. A good start for us as we take a few days normally to warm up.

Diving interesting, Daley back with a bang. Him and his partner Williams have been superb. Silver guaranteed. China excellent and well worth the gold. But as ever, always wonder about what goes on training wise in China. They have previous, lots of it

Big fan of the Olympics, sport you wouldn’t normally get to see and for some the pinnacle of their careers. Commentators can be OTT and endless reruns of things irritating, but that’s not the athletes fault. I love the swimming ( both my kids competed when they were younger and I know how hard it is to make it to the top), athletics, rowing and canoe stuff. Lots of other things I enjoy dipping in and out of, but I wouldn’t bother with football at all and the horsey stuff is all about money and the best animals. If it was a case of Olympics or football World Cup, I’d go with the former. Always got the O’s for my footie fix.

I’m with Buffalobill on this. Watching sports that otherwise would never bother with. Refreshing to watch high diving, equestrian, archery and so on. And athletes at the top of their game.
The commentators milk it. Bit boring, but they have to fill the void between competition. So I don’t bother with the waffle.

I havent watched a single second. I dont set out to avoid it but it just doesnt grab my attention and force me to watch it by the power of its enchantment. I just find it all a bit meh and I cannot find the strength to watch with admiration whilst ignoring all the nonsense behind the scenes. The commentary its just hyperbolic regurgitation.
Give me a nice game of cricket any day and yes that includes the flawed yet entertaining Hundred.
